May 30

Until a railway connection in 1877 made it possible for Victorian vacationers to visit Porthminster Beach, the economy of St. Ives, Cornwall, depended on fishing. Today it’s a resort town that draws visitors from around the UK and abroad. If you get out to the beach at dawn, when this photo was taken, you may be able to find a good spot on the sand for your beach blanket. It gets crowded on sunny days.
